The Historical Seaport is now taking reservations for our summer programs of five-day Expedition Voyages Family and Youth Camps. You値l sail the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington State, following in the wake of maritime explorers George Vancouver, Robert Gray, and Charles Wilkes.
You値l learn to set sail, stand watch, and take the helm of a replica 18th-century tall ship. At each remote stop, you値l explore the island with trained naturalists. In the evening, you値l discuss the expedition's findings and develop a plan for the next day. There値l be time for a day hike and a brisk swim.

K-12 Voyages of Discovery

Voyages of Discovery is so much more than a boat ride. And here's a video that shows it. San Francisco filmmaker Noah Smith produced a three-minute film of an educational program in action, caled Life of a Tall Ship Sailor on the Lady Washington.

You and your students are in for a unique experience that will stimulate interest and motivate understanding of history, geography, math, science and communication skills. The Voyages of Discovery program is a three-part journey through the world of late 18th century merchant sailors. Over the course of the program your students will explore a wide variety of core subject areas as they move back in time to the 1790's and see just how young people much like themselves sailed the world's oceans in search of fame and fortune.
The Voyages of Discovery program culminates in your visit to the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain, pictured above. (Lady Washington is unavailable October 2009 through February 2010.) Your time on board the vessels is surely the highlight, but we recommend taking advantage of the pre-visit activities we've designed for you. We want your experience with us to be a meaningful part of your academic year.
