Tall Ship Hawaiian Chieftain calling volunteers, want to spend your winter on a tall ship?

Hawaiian Chieftain deckhandNot everyone can say they’ve sailed the Pacific Ocean on a replica 19th century vessel. Grays Harbor Historical Seaport is offering you the chance to do just that. Our educational non-profit is currently seeking volunteer crew members who want to live aboard Hawaiian Chieftain this fall and winter, learning to sail and maintain the boat and assisting with educational field trips for kids.

As a volunteer crew member you would report to the vessel for additional training, and the professional crew will show you all the ropes. You would have a bunk to call your own, and a ships cook prepares all the meals. Lifelong friends are made, and amazing adventures are had on these vessels. You can look forward to teaching basic maritime history lessons, climbing the rigging, sanding and painting the boat, standing watch both during the day and at night as you sail from one port to another.

Training is provided for all of these activities. You must be 18 or older to apply.

To apply, email your resume or an application and why you want to join the crew to Capt. Sam Dinsmore at jobs@historicalseaport.org.

This is great way to build on your work experience. Sailing or similar level of work experience in a nonprofit, educational, or outdoor setting required. If you have no relevant work experience, please see our Two Weeks Before the Mast program for more information. All successful applicants must pass a background check and drug test prior to arriving at the vessel.

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, but offers room, board, and the opportunity to learn more about square-rig sailing. You do not have to have square-rig sailing experience! Preference for crew members available right away, and those who can volunteer for over 45 days. All successful applicants must pass a background check and drug test prior to arriving at the vessel.

The vessel is currently docked in Sacramento, California and will be departing at the end of November to visit beautiful ports in sunny southern California. For a better idea of what we do all day, check out our Instagram and Facebook.
