Lady Washington does an encore on the Columbia River this fall
The Lady Washington is now cruising the Columbia River on an unexpected but exciting encore to her spring trip to the Tri-Cities. The ship was scheduled for a three-month lay-up in Aberdeen this fall, but a change in the maintenance plans suddenly freed her for a voyage close to home. We decided to send her back up the Columbia to serve people we missed earlier this year. We’ll stop at these river ports: Astoria, Cathlamet, Kalama, Vancouver, Washougal, Hood River, The Dalles, Arlington, Umatilla, Pasco, St. Helens, Rainier, and Ilwaco. For Lady Washington's current location, visit the Historical Seaport website.

The theme for the tour is “2009 Columbia River Fall Education Tour,” because of our special emphasis on K-12 Voyages of Discovery educational programs. Teachers interested in scheduling a program should contact Reasa Shuck, 360-589-2299, rshuck@historicalseaport.org. More information is available on our website. Lady Washington returns to Aberdeen December 14.

Hawaiian Chieftain sails to California for the winter season
Hawaiian Chieftain has arrived in California for a six-month season of living history educational programs and public sailings in 11 ports: Sacramento, Antioch, Rio Vista, Santa Cruz, Newport Beach, Oxnard, Ventura, Oakland, Redwood City, Eureka, and Crescent City. Our tour theme is “California 2009-2010: Hands-on History for Youth.” The boat is already well-booked with Voyages of Discovery educational programs, but there’s still plenty of space. If you are a California teacher or know one, or you know a home-school family, please ask the teacher or the family to call us about booking a program.

SAILING GREEN campaign to reduce Lady Washington's carbon footprint
The Historical Seaport is committed to environmental responsibility, as well as education. That’s why we’re raising $100,000 to replace Lady Washington’s aging diesel engine with a new engine that meets or exceeds the strictest emissions standards. We’re calling our campaign SAILING GREEN, and it’s more than the right thing to do. If we don’t replace Lady Washington’s engine, we might not be able to operate in California, because of the state’s air pollution regulations. That puts a damper on our ability to deliver educational programs and act as tall ship ambassador for Grays Harbor County and Washington State. The need for replacing Lady Washington’s engine is urgent. Please donate online via the SAILING GREEN links at our website. Or call us at 800-200-5239 for more information.
The Spar Shop: New foremast turned for schooner Zodiac
Over the summer, the Spar Shop at the Historical Seaport turned one of its biggest projects to date: a new foremast for the Seattle-based schooner Zodiac. The Spar Shop mounted a 117-foot log in the shop’s tracer lathe, and the project drew interest from all over the Northwest. If you know of a tall ship owner, premium home-builder, or movie producer or set designer looking for high-quality large-scale woodwork, contact Spar Shop manager Kent Wall at 800-200-5239, sparshop@historicalseaport.org.

Education Program Sponsorship helps kids experience tall ship magic
Serving elementary, middle school, and high school students is at the core of our mission. But in today’s challenging economic times, many school districts are cutting back on the kinds of life-changing experiences offered by Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. You can help us bring these experiences to young people through our new Education Program Sponsorships. With as little as $10, you can sponsor a student’s participation in our popular Voyages of Discovery shipboard experiences. Larger sponsorships enable a class to attend a dockside or sailing experience. For more information visit our Education Program Sponsorships web page or contact Reasa Shuck, 360-589-2299, rshuck@historicalseaport.org.
