Popular living history education programs are taking reservations for California program today
California teachers and home schoolers are contacting the Historical Seaport today about popular living history programs aboard the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. The ships provide a unique hands-on experience that takes history out of the classroom and onto a real tall ship. Expert crew in period costume explain the basics of life for an 18th century mariner and the history of early exploration and trade on the west coast. Curricula is available online at the Historical Seaport website. To reserve space, contact Reasa Shuck, rshuck@historicalseaport.org, 800-200-5239, ext 109.

Grays Harbor youth explore the San Juan Islands and learn about life on the high seas
Twenty-six Grays Harbor teens boarded the Lady Washington on August 3 for a life-changing, 12-day experience exploring the remote shores of the San Juan Islands near the Canadian border. With funding assistance from the American Sail Training Association, the US Department of Justice and Seaport supporters, Grays Harbor Historical Seaport was able to grant each participant a full scholarship for this exciting new program. The program was also supported by several Grays Harbor businesses, which donated cash and equipment. We’ve posted photos and watch log reports from the trip on the Historical Seaport Blog. Search on the term “youth adventure” to find the entries. |

New tools mean expanded capabilities for the Spar Shop
The Spar Shop recently partnered with the Polson Museum in Hoquiam, Wash. to purchase a new sawmill with a 21-inch flush cutting blade, extra track, a seven-foot slabbing attachment and a planer head. This is a major upgrade, allowing us to mill virtually any dimension log, as well as timbers of up to 100 feet or more. The planing attachment also allows precision faceting of masts and yards. When used in conjunction with the slabbing attachment, the Spar Shop can now mill and plane smooth, large slabs for burl tables, single plank tables, and other needs. Learn more.
