Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, which are visiting more than a dozen California ports on their annual educational tour, will stop in Newport Beach for the 2012 New Year’s holiday weekend and the first weekend of the year. Arriving Dec. 27 at the Newport Sea Base, Newport Beach, 1931 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach, the ships will stage cannon battles and open for public tours from Dec. 27 to Jan. 11, 2012.
At 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 31, and Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 8, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will host guests for three-hour Battle Sails, which feature close-quarters naval-style maneuvers similar to those used in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Guests are invited to help raise a sail, steer the ships (conditions permitting), and verbally taunt adversaries. Tickets are $60 adults, $50 students/senior/active military, and $40 children 12 and under. Purchase tickets online or call 800-200-5239. Early reservations are strongly recommended. Groups of 8 or more automatically receive a 15% per ticket discount.
An additional family Adventure Sail is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. Tickets are just $35 each, and may be purchased online or by calling 800-200-5239.
The ships will open for walk-on tours on these dates and times: Dec. 28, 29, 30, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Dec. 31, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jan. 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jan. 3, 4, 5, 6, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Jan. 7, 8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jan. 10, 11, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Crew in period costume will welcome visitors. A $3 donation per person is appreciated. No reservations are required for walk-on tours. Both vessels will be closed to the public on New Years Day.
